Last week, news of the on-again, off-again Mountains of Madness project by Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro (Cronos, Pan’s Labyrinth) was greeted with glee, then disappointment, and finally (what else?) insanity. If you’re one of those sad Lovecraft fans, cheer up. You can still catch some good Lovecraftian movies at the 2011 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival.
Submissions are now being accepted for the festival, held September 16 & 17 at theĀ Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, Southern California. The best short films will be screened and judged by Guillermo del Toro. More information can be found on the main HPLFF website.
The festival was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore. It traditionally took place in Portland, Oregon. This year, it has moved to Los Angeles and is organized by Aaron Vanek. Vanek has shot several Lovecraftian shorts (The Yellow Sign, Return to Innsmouth) and is a long-time Lovecraft fan. Next year, the festival might return to Portland in May of 2012.
